Ascending the World Tree...
The cosmic axis connecting all realms of existence
At the center of Slavic cosmology stands the World Tree - a cosmic oak so vast that its branches hold the heavens and its roots pierce the underworld.
Known in different traditions as the "Golden Tree" or the "Tree of Life," it connects all three realms: Prav (heaven) in its crown, Yav (the mortal world) along its trunk, and Nav (the underworld) among its roots. The tree is constantly nourished by the waters of life that flow from its base.
Around it, the cosmic drama unfolds. Perun sits in its crown, watching over the world. Veles lurks among its roots, occasionally climbing up to challenge the thunder god. Sacred animals dwell in its branches, and the fate of all beings is woven into its bark.
The realm of gods and cosmic order. Perun rules from here, surrounded by the other celestial deities. The sun and moon travel through this realm.
The mortal realm where humans, animals, and nature spirits live. This is the world we experience - constantly changing, always in balance.
The realm of ancestors, spirits, and Veles. Not a place of punishment, but a shadow realm where the dead continue their existence.
Sits in the crown of the World Tree, serving as Perun's messenger and guardian of the heavenly realm. It sees all that happens in the world below.
Lives among the roots, serving Veles. It constantly gnaws at the tree's roots, threatening to bring down the cosmic order - but the tree grows as fast as it's eaten.
Runs up and down the trunk, carrying messages between the eagle and the serpent. It represents the constant communication between heaven and underworld.
The World Tree is more than a mythological concept - it's a map of the Slavic universe. Every element has meaning:
In folk tradition, planting a tree near one's home was seen as connecting that household to the cosmic order. The tree's health reflected the family's fortune.
